Server Upgrade

It’s been about a month sine i moved into a house for the first time since my early 20s. Trying to find places in my life to upgrade a little bit as well now that I have a home I can be proud of. I got a new case in to house some parts i’ve had since black friday sitting on my desk. I picked up a bundle at micro center that included 16gb of ddr4-3200, a ryzen 5 5600x3d. The 3d cache i’ve heard is great for star citizen’s un-optomized buggy mess of a game that is too good not to just stomach the issues and keep playing.

So here’s the plan:

a) i’m gonna plop the new 5600x3d, 16gb, and asus TUF gaming b550-plus with Wifi and bluetooth into my gaming pc, give me a bit of a boost there.

b) Taking the Ryzen 5 3600, 16gb ddr4 and old mobo out of my gaming pc and putting that in the server.

I haven’t updated my server in about 10 years since i built it for $200. Should be interesting to see how an upgrade performs. For sure I thought the bottleneck had always been my internet connection and switching to fiber in the new house definitly validated that, however I would love to be able to get reliable 4k streams outside of my home network, which i’m hoping the new parts will help with.

I also want to set up tdarr to do some processing of my files after download. Should eliminate the need of 2 processes to get different resolutions. Will save some storage space as well. I’m sitting now with about 7 terrabytes of total storage but I want to start replacing some of the smaller disks in my server so that I can increase my space with the same number of drives.

Should be some interesting expirimenting in the coming months. Might even throw a gpu in there if the power supply can handle it. fingers crossed.
